1 MIN READ -- On Sunday, August 13, Chicago Loop Alliance’s final Sundays on State of the season concluded. The award-winning event series continued to break records, with over 146,000 attendees along the event footprint. Mayor Brandon Johnson and his family also joined in the celebration.
Sundays on State, the internationally acclaimed event series, transforms State Street into an interactive block party filled with active recreation, dining, shopping, and entertainment. The event series began in 2021 as a way to accelerate the economic recovery, unite the community, and create joy; hosting two events in 2023 and over 350 vendors, primarily from underrepresented businesses.
The event, now a staple in the community, offers a delightful blend of entertainment, culture, and togetherness, and the mayor's presence encapsulates the community spirit both Sundays on State and Mayor Johnson are known for.
As Mayor Johnson met with several Sundays on State partners and sponsors, he exclaimed the lively and infectious energy of the event series. “…the soul of Chicago was alive and evident [on State Street],” said Johnson.
His young children interacted with several vendors like Paint the City and True Lovelies. Hundreds of attendees gathered with the mayor as he danced to Beyonce’s “Break My Soul”.
Throughout Mayor Brandon Johnson’s appearance, the excitement of Sundays on State palpably showed on him and his family’s faces, interacting with local Chicagoans, underrepresented businesses, and businesses along State Street.
The positive impacts of Sundays on State extended beyond the economic benefits. The event draws hundreds of thousands to experience the joy, unity and power of community. And Mayor Johnson and his family played a large role in that energy on August 13.
