Glessner House is a trip back to Chicago's Gilded Age. Immerse yourself in this celebrated architectural treasure that inspired a generation of architects like a young Frank Lloyd Wright.

A National Historic Landmark, Glessner House was designed by noted American architect Henry Hobson Richardson and completed in 1887, it is widely regarded as his urban residential masterpiece and remains an internationally-known architectural treasure. A radical departure from traditional Victorian architecture, the structure served as an inspiration to architects such as Louis Sullivan, Mies van der Rohe, and the young Frank Lloyd Wright and helped redefine domestic architecture. The mission of Glessner House is to spark excitement in architecture, history, and design through a dynamic exploration of the house, its family, and its preservation with a vison to inspire people to enrich their own lives through experiencing the power of architecture, design, and cultural history.

 

The house is available for exploration through regular public tours, group tours, and specialized tours focusing on the many stories of the architecture, furnishings, and family, including Frances Glessner Lee, recognized nationally as the mother of forensic science. It contains the majority of its original furnishings, including custom-designed furniture and decorative arts. A wide variety of events, ranging from concerts and food events to online programs, are also offered, along with opportunities to explore the surrounding Prairie Avenue Historic District.

 

Several spaces are available for rental including the restored coach house, the intimate courtyard, and the historic dining room.
