1 MIN READ -- The Chicago Architecture Center recently announced it will have the first holiday exhibition in its history on view in its Skyscraper Gallery. City In A Snow Globe on view starting November 17 is designed by the Chicago architecture firm UrbanLab.
The exhibition consists of five individual scale models of winter scenes that visitors can peer into, including Polar Bear Plunge accommodations, monumental snow men, winterized displays at Buckingham Fountain, plus more novel and exciting ways to inhabit the lakefront in Chicago’s winter.
Accompanying the holiday exhibition will be a display on the first floor featuring more than two dozen snow globes from local designers and architecture firms. Each participating firm is asked to design around the theme of embracing Chicago winters. The results are fantastical and imaginative interpretations of what it means to be in the city during the coldest months.
“Chicago is so great about celebrating and making use of our public spaces, especially in the summer. But what would happen if we embraced them in the winter as well? We looked to the design community to create concepts for the lakefront that could keep it alive and vibrant through the colder months, and the results are fantastical and thought-provoking,” says Director of Exhibitions and Curator Eve Fineman.
The Chicago Architecture Center’s holiday programming will include a Winter Wonderland Lego Workshop for kids on Saturday, December 3. A festive family workshop that will explore buildings suited for frosty environments. Kids will explore the five individual scale models of winter scenes on display in the City in A Snow Globe and then have an opportunity to create their own icy structure to complete a winter wonderland that will be reviewed by a special guest – a beloved snow queen. All supplies for this workshop will be provided at no cost to children 12 and under, including hot chocolate and cookies.
The Chicago Architecture Center is excited to continue its long-lasting tradition as the go-to for unique design and architecture-themed holiday gifts at its CAC Design Store. The store is known for thoughtful and exclusive gifts for everyone from the architecture buff to the design lover, the diehard Chicagoan to the inquisitive child, and everyone in between. The commemorative ornament is included with the purchase of a Chicago Architecture Center Gift Membership.
