CDOT Lake St. Bridge Construction Update
Contractors continue to work on the major rehabilitation of the historically eligible Lake Street Bascule Bridge. Please see some updates for upcoming work detailed below:
- West Bridge House Demo: Daily Bridge House demo on weekly day shifts continue as planned for the remainder of the year. Currently scheduled for regular weekday hours.
- Lake Street Bridge Lifts: A bridge lift took place on January 6, 2026 to move the crane barge to the south side of the bridge to continue bridge house demolition.
- 150 N. Riverside Upper Riverwalk Access: The south side of the west bridge house demolition involves removing the sidewalk concrete (machinery level roof) and therefore pedestrian access from Lake Street to 150 N. Riverside Plaza Upper Riverwalk will be closed beginning Monday, January 12, 2026; see sketch below. This closure is planned to stay in place until sidewalk restoration is complete which is expected later in summer 2026.
- Nightwork: The contractor will be performing preparation for bridge repair
- Adjacent Projects:
- Comed to provide new power service to the west bridge house, work to be scheduled in the first half of 2026, look out for updates and impacts.
CDOT strives to improve the City of Chicago’s bridge and roadway network while maintaining safe access to transit partners as well as businesses and residents in the area.
Access Closed Lake Street to 150 N Riverside Riverwalk Plaza:
State/ Lake Station Project Update
The State and Lake Station reconstruction project includes a complete redesign of one of Chicago’s busiest transit stations to improve safety, accessibility, and comfort for riders, and marks a new gateway to downtown.
Please note, the State/Lake Elevated Station will close on January 5, 2026 for demolition and full reconstruction for the duration of the project. All business will remain open during construction. Read more about the construction and service impacts.
CTA Impacts
- State/Lake Loop Elevated Station:
- Starting Monday, January 5, 2026, the existing State/Lake elevated station will close for demolition and reconstruction.
- Trains operating along the Brown, Green, Orange and Pink lines and the Purple Line Express will no longer stop at the State/Lake elevated station for the duration of the construction.
- Loop trains will continue to operate, and customers can use the adjacent and fully accessible stations: Washington/Wabash and Clark/Lake.
- Subway:
- The Lake Red Line subway station will remain open. There are currently no impacts to the subway station.
- Bus:
- State Street bus service is operating normally for all routes. No impacts at this time.
These work activities may result in louder noise and some vibrations in the area. Visit the project website to learn how the team is working to reduce these impacts.

Chicago Loop Alliance encourages everyone to be aware of standard security procedures. Loop stakeholders are urged to take the following precautions:
- Get alerts from Notify Chicago on various emergency and non-emergency situations in your area.
- The city reminds the public to remain aware and cautious. CPD has provided tips on how to prevent becoming a carjacking victim.
- Consider an optional tool for business owners to assist CPD with chronic trespassing issues. To enroll in the program, please find helpful Trespass Affidavit Program forms here.
- The city reminds the public to be aware of their surroundings and to report suspicious activity. If you notice something suspicious, notify onsite security or call 9-1-1. If You See Something, Say Something™ is a national anti-terrorism public awareness campaign that emphasizes the importance of reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities.
- Sign up for Smart911 to help first responders rapidly assist in the case of an emergency.
- Make sure Chicago Loop Alliance has current contact information for your business by emailing info@chicagoloopalliance.com with full contact information. Watch for emails from CLA containing security or other pertinent information.

Sign Up for Emergency Alert System for Businesses
The city of Chicago is rolling out a new program to provide emergency alerts to businesses. Local business owners can text “CHIBIZ” to 67283 or visit chicago.gov/chibizalerts to opt in to get the alerts. Businesses will be asked to submit some details specific to their business so that the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection and the Office of Emergency Management and Communication can send targeted alerts to specific areas of the city, as needed.
