Chicago has been the \u201ccandy capital of the world\u201d since the late 1800s. Tootsie Rolls, Brach\u2019s, Frango, Wrigley Gum, Fannie May, and Mars Candy\u00a0all have roots in Chicago. The Loop, specifically, has a rich history in candy making.\u00a0Fannie May\u2019s first store was in the Loop&#8217;s Business District, and\u00a0Frango\u00a0mints were produced at\u00a0Marshall Field&#8217;s on State Street for 70 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">While Mars and Tootsie Roll still have confectioneries in Chicago, it is the city&#8217;s passion for sweet treats that has kept our title strong.\u00a0To celebrate National Candy Month\u00a0we are exploring the past and present of candy\u00a0making in Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"loop-h2 wp-block-heading\"><strong>Timeline of Candy Production in Chicago<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1904\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Emil Brach opened his first store, &#8220;Palace of Sweets&#8221; with one large cooking vat.\u00a0By 1923, he had four candy factories\u00a0operating\u00a0at capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1929<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Frango Mints introduced its recipe.\u00a0The mints were produced in a large melting pot on the 13th floor of Marshall Field&#8217;s on State St. Today, a small batch of Frango Mints are made at Macy&#8217;s on State St.,\u00a0the former location of Marshall Field&#8217;s,\u00a0to\u00a0commemorate the store&#8217;s history.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While Mars and Tootsie Roll still have confectioneries in Chicago, it is the city&#8217;s passion for sweet treats that has kept our title strong.
