{"id":5250,"date":"2018-09-13T20:55:07","date_gmt":"2018-09-13T20:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loopchicagodev.wpenginepowered.com\/washington-and-wabash-station-turns-1-how-the-street-is-transforming\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T21:30:37","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T21:30:37","slug":"washington-and-wabash-station-turns-1-how-the-street-is-transforming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/chicago-loop-blog\/washington-and-wabash-station-turns-1-how-the-street-is-transforming\/","title":{"rendered":"Washington and Wabash Station Turns 1: How the Street is Transforming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"loop-intro wp-block-paragraph\">Wabash in the Loop isn\u2019t what it used to be\u2014and its transformation is no accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">The one-year anniversary of the Washington and Wabash CTA station may have the street at the top of Chicagoans\u2019 minds, but the station isn\u2019t the only change that\u2019s hit Wabash in the past few years, and even more revitalization is yet to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the efforts on Wabash have been led by <a href=\"http:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/cla\/\">Chicago Loop Alliance<\/a>, which assembled a task force of property managers, business owners, and other stakeholders to imagine, and then bring to life, the future of the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe idea is to make Wabash a destination,\u201d said Michael Edwards, President and CEO of Chicago Loop Alliance. \u201cIn 2013, we completed our strategic plan, and the number one project in the area of economic development was transforming Wabash.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">When <a href=\"http:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/go\/millennium-park\/\">Millennium Park<\/a> opened in 2004, Chicago Loop Alliance noticed that visitors to the park were walking up and down Michigan, and Wabash was functioning as an \u201curban edge\u201d\u2014pedestrians on Michigan couldn\u2019t really see past Wabash to State Street because of the L tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMichigan Avenue was a destination, State Street was a destination, and we thought Wabash is so unique that it ought to be a go-to destination, too,\u201d Edwards said. \u201cThe idea was to transform Wabash so that instead of a divide, it\u2019s a connector that would encourage people to move between those two centers of energy, Michigan and State.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large loop-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/City-Seats-by-Chicago-Loop-Alliance__FocusFillWzEsMSwieCIsMF0.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">These efforts have been accompanied by the work of outside organizations, too, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofchicago.org\/city\/en\/depts\/dca.html\">City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events<\/a>\u2019 artsy creatures hanging from the L tracks, and a mural project coming soon to Harold Washington College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are currently working with DCASE on the mural project,\u201d said Ignacio Lopez, President of <a href=\"http:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/go\/harold-washington-college1\/\">Harold Washington College<\/a>. \u201cThe goal would be to have a mural on the Wabash side of the building that wraps around the back alley. How great would it be for our students, and the Loop community\u2014and Chicago\u2014to have this mural?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">There are also a few major developments in the works on this stretch of Wabash that will likely significantly increase the pedestrian count. A 39-room boutique hotel is planned for the 136-year-old Jewelers Building at 19 S. Wabash. And <a href=\"http:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/go\/cedarst-companies\/\">Cedar Street<\/a> is in the midst of redeveloping the 93-year-old building at 30 E. Adams St. (part of which faces Wabash) into a 176-unit residential property with street-level retail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Will Murphy, managing partner of Cedar Street, said the quirks of Wabash compared to Michigan or State can actually be an asset to a developer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think public and private investment into the Wabash corridor has changed the landscape over the last five years,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cWe\u2019re excited about the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large loop-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Wabash-Light-Mock-Up-by-Wabash-Lights__FocusFillWzEsMSwieCIsMF0.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Another development in the works could be the key to turning Wabash into a destination for visitors and Chicago residents alike: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewabashlights.com\/\">Wabash Lights<\/a>. The project hopes to bring an interactive art installation that utilizes light and technology to the L tracks themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe thing I\u2019m most excited about is our collaboration with <a href=\"http:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/go\/depaul-university\/\">DePaul<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cps.edu\/Pages\/home.aspx\">Chicago Public Schools<\/a> teachers to build a STEAM curriculum for CPS students to program the lights,\u201d said Maria Demopoulos, board chair of Wabash Lights. \u201cThe curriculum is modular. So in earlier lessons, students will evaluate competing design concepts and think through how to visually represent an idea on the lights. In later lessons, they can connect the lights to musical instruments or dance movements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Edwards said the combined efforts of Chicago Loop Alliance, private industry, and other non-profits will continue to transform Wabash into the destination he always knew it could be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the future, maybe there are cool lights, the creatures are there, you\u2019re sitting in a street cafe of a new restaurant, you\u2019re staying in a hip new hotel\u2014these things start to work together to make the street more of a place to go, a place to be,\u201d he said. \u201cMaybe there\u2019s a one-liner somewhere in there: \u2018The Wabash District: Where the weird meets with wonderful.\u2019\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wabash in the Loop isn\u2019t what it used to be\u2014and its transformation is no accident.<\/p>","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[58],"tags":[65,21,67,57],"class_list":["post-5250","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-loop-news","tag-events","tag-free","tag-public-art-parks-plazas","tag-things-to-do"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
