Known for pollution and crime, the thought of recreating in or along the water would have made any Chicagoan raise their eyebrows. But over the past eight years, the <a href=\"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/listings\/chicago-riverwalk\/\">Chicago Riverwalk<\/a> has become an iconic public space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Chicago Riverwalk has transformed the Chicago River into the city\u2019s next great recreational frontier,\u201d said Mayor Rahm Emanuel in 2018. \u201cIt\u2019s a way for residents and visitors to embrace Chicago\u2019s beauty and culture like never before and experience the best the city has to offer\u2014from iconic architecture to great food and festivals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large loop-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/ACTIVATE-on-the-Riverwalk-Photo-by-Stephanie-Jensen-for-Canvas-x-ACTIVATE__FocusFillWzEsMSwieCIsMF0.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">The extent of the Riverwalk\u2019s success is above and beyond what was even imagined. Now, it is home to successful, growing businesses. Improvements are underway on its east end to make it accessible and vibrant. And this September, as many as 100 people will participate in the first <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoopenwater.com\/\"><\/a> in the river in more than 100 years\u2014a testament to the efforts that have been made to clean up the water itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">On May 22, from 7:30-9:15 a.m., Chicago Loop Alliance will host its first <a href=\"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/join\/member-events\/downtown-futures-series\/\">Downtown Futures Series<\/a> event of 2019, Changes at the Riverwalk: The Evolution of Chicago\u2019s Latest Iconic Public Space.
