{"id":5159,"date":"2019-10-08T14:32:28","date_gmt":"2019-10-08T14:32:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loopchicagodev.wpenginepowered.com\/october-loop-employee-of-the-month-gwendolyn-matthews\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T21:28:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T21:28:15","slug":"october-loop-employee-of-the-month-gwendolyn-matthews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/chicago-loop-blog\/october-loop-employee-of-the-month-gwendolyn-matthews\/","title":{"rendered":"October Loop Employee of the Month Gwendolyn Matthews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"loop-intro wp-block-paragraph\">4 MIN READ &#8211; Gwendolyn Matthews, the October Loop Employee of the Month, is the heart and soul of Carpe Librum, a beloved used book store in Block 37 run by the nonprofit organization Turning the Page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve ever shopped at Carpe Librum, the used bookstore in Block 37, you\u2019ve most likely met Gwendolyn Matthews. Gwen has worked since 2017 as a sales associate for the store, which generates revenue for <a href=\"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/in-the-loop\/turning-the-page-brings-character-to-the-loop\/\">Turning the Page<\/a>, a nonprofit organization that advocates for stronger parent involvement in Chicago Public School students\u2019 education. Five (or more) days a week, Gwen is at the Carpe Librum counter greeting customers with a cheerful, \u201cHello, how are you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love the customers,\u201d she said. \u201cThey are just phenomenal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Gwen worked at TransUnion in the Loop for \u201ca million years\u201d before retiring and taking on the job at Carpe Librum. She said at TransUnion, she was more of a behind-the-scenes player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI really enjoy working with customers now because when I was at TransUnion, I never interacted with the public,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I enjoy the people. I have a lot of regulars I\u2019ve gotten to know over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">And it\u2019s clear that that\u2019s true&#8211;during a recent lunch hour in the store, not more than 10 minutes would go by without someone wandering in and receiving a personalized greeting from Gwen. \u201cDid you forget to bring your books to donate?\u201d \u201cDid you finish that collection of children\u2019s stories?\u201d It brought a smile to all the customers\u2019 faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large loop-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/10__FocusFillWzEsMSwieCIsMF0.02.19-Gwendolyn-Matthews-05-credit-Hummingbird-Studios.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Gwen also loves the people she works with, and she has a special place in her heart for the bookstore\u2019s volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI get them coffee and donuts, and we chit chat, and they enjoy working here,\u201d she said. \u201cThey always text me and say, \u2018Okay, Gwen, when are you working? Okay, I\u2019ll be there that night.\u2019 Their time is valuable, and for them to want to spend their time helping out, I appreciate that so much because they don\u2019t have to do it. But they take the time, they do it right, and they really love it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">The way Gwen describes it, Carpe Librum and Turning the Page feel like a big family. She recalled hurting her knee in an accident last winter, and her colleagues\u2019 reaction brought her to tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe office sent me a card and a gift card, and I couldn\u2019t stop crying,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was just so nice of them to think about me and to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Gwen said her favorite part about working in the Loop is being able to meet friends for brunch or lunch before her afternoon shift begins. When she worked at TransUnion, Beef and Brandy was her go-to spot (\u201cBeef and Brandy was the place!\u201d she said), but now she enjoys trying new things. <a href=\"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/listings\/nandos-peri-peri-117-e-lake-street\/\">Nando\u2019s Peri-Peri<\/a> is a new favorite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">While Gwen would have been perfectly happy to continue working at Carpe Librum with her big family&#8211;her coworkers, volunteers, and customers&#8211;showing her their love and appreciation, she said it is very exciting to be the October Loop Employee of the Month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t believe it,\u201d she said about learning she\u2019d been selected. \u201cI was like, \u2018For me?\u2019 I was so excited. I\u2019ve never won anything before, and I was just too excited.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhenever I work in the store, people are always asking about Gwen and when she\u2019ll be working next,\u201d said Andrew Hertzberg, development associate with Turning the Page. \u201cShe has cultivated such a wonderful following due to her sense of humor, empathic nature, and overall warm heart. Our bookstore would not be what it is today without Gwen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\"><em>We are the city that works. And the Loop is at the center of Chicago\u2019s powerful workforce.
