{"id":5142,"date":"2020-01-03T15:13:33","date_gmt":"2020-01-03T15:13:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loopchicagodev.wpenginepowered.com\/life-size-bear-sculptures-to-hibernate-in-the-pedway-this-winter\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T21:25:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T21:25:15","slug":"life-size-bear-sculptures-to-hibernate-in-the-pedway-this-winter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/chicago-loop-blog\/life-size-bear-sculptures-to-hibernate-in-the-pedway-this-winter\/","title":{"rendered":"Bears hibernating in the Chicago pedway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"loop-intro wp-block-paragraph\">2 MIN READ &#8211;\u00a0This winter, Chicagoans who walk the Pedway, a network of underground tunnels in the Loop, are being greeted by some surprising new inhabitants: hibernating bears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">In celebration of the winter solstice and as part of its continued work to draw attention to the Pedway, <a href=\"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/\">Chicago Loop Alliance\u2019s<\/a> \u201cMassimals in the Loop\u201d art installation was completed on Friday, December 20, under the Daley Center, Macy\u2019s, and Thompson Center. The project will last through the winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">The hibernating bears are called Massimals, and they are 1:1 design objects that serve as prototypes to examine how physical form can engage the public realm. These constructs are abstractions of animal forms built in the manner of massing study models produced in an architectural design practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large loop-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Massimals-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMassimals in the Loop\u201d is by artist <a href=\"https:\/\/jasonscroggin.com\/\">Jason Scroggin\/Scroggin Studio<\/a> and was curated by <a href=\"https:\/\/space-p11.com\/\">Space p11<\/a>, an art gallery located at 55 E. Randolph St. in the Pedway. Chicago Loop Alliance also partnered with Space p11 in December 2018 on <a href=\"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/do-business\/media\/press-releases\/chicago-loop-alliance-space-p11-plan-artsy-pop-up-activations-in-pedway-with-short-cuts\/\">\u201cShort-Cuts,\u201d<\/a> a series of Pedway pop-up art activations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChicago Loop Alliance\u2019s mission is to make the Loop as vibrant as it can be through various program areas and initiatives, and the Pedway is a part of the Loop that can certainly use a little attention,\u201d said Chicago Loop Alliance Director of Planning Kalindi Parikh. \u201cThe Massimals have now been down there for a few days, and it\u2019s been a blast to see how they\u2019re brightening people\u2019s commutes.
