{"id":5126,"date":"2020-03-09T19:47:16","date_gmt":"2020-03-09T19:47:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loopchicagodev.wpenginepowered.com\/the-art-of-inclusion-2\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T21:22:55","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T21:22:55","slug":"the-art-of-inclusion-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/chicago-loop-blog\/the-art-of-inclusion-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Art of Inclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"loop-intro wp-block-paragraph\">1 MIN READ &#8211; March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of community inclusion and raise public awareness about the barriers people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I\/DD) encounter on a regular basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Two Loop Alliance members, <a href=\"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/listings\/envision-unlimited\/\">Envision Unlimited<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/es\/listings\/the-art-institute-of-chicago\/\">The Art Institute of Chicago<\/a>, are working together to more effectively welcome people with I\/DD to the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Envision Unlimited is a nonprofit social service organization that supports persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities of all ages and abilities throughout Chicago. While Envision Unlimited members have always enjoyed exploring museum exhibits, they were not always able to access them fully. Now they are helping provide feedback on the Art Institute\u2019s Ryan Learning Center renovation that will incorporate Universal Design, making it easier for people with disabilities to enjoy the Art Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large loop-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/loopchicago.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_0456-v2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Universal Design is the idea that spaces should be intentionally designed to be accessible to as many people as possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. Envision Unlimited members have been able to give feedback on design concepts, signage and symbols, interactive installations, interior design elements, and furniture selection. They were pleased to offer their advice and felt proud to be in an environment where their voices were heard and amplified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">One Envision Unlimited member proudly commented on his experience, \u201cI was able to share how I want to be treated by museum staff, and they seemed to really understand issues I have faced when navigating the museum in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lc-post-paragraph wp-block-paragraph\">Because of Envision Unlimited\u2019s work, the members of the organization are changing the cultural landscape in Chicago by offering feedback because the city currently does not have any museum programming for adults with I\/DD.
