Southern-style Cooking Coming to the Loop

“Yonder,” a spinoff from Wishbone's Guy Nickson, is Chicago’s newest Southern picnic cafeteria, and it’s opening October 7 for breakfast and lunch in the Loop.

The cafeteria-style restaurant, located on the third floor of 5 S Wabash Avenue, will seat 70, but that will be on only about a dozen communal tables. Patrons will choose their meals from digital “chalkboards” and then sit to enjoy a Southern, community-style meal.

“The idea is the bring community together and have the serendipity of dining together,” said Mr. Nickson to Crain’s Ari Bendersky.

Items on the menu will be familiar already to Wishbone patrons: pancakes, corn cakes, omelets, shrimp and grits, and biscuits and gravy for breakfast; collard greens, sweet potatoes, catfish, chicken, a carving station and barbecue brisket at lunch.

According to their website, the concept and naming “is a rendering of that break in the trees where the work stops and life turns festive over corn bread, BBQ, catfish and greens.”
