Celebrating the Chinese New Year in Chicago

The Loop will come alive with the sights, sounds, and tastes of Chinese culture during the Chinese New Year. From awe-inspiring traditional Chinese music to rooftop celebrations, there are plenty of ways to ring in the Year of the Sheep!

Throughout the city you will find many programs that exemplify Chicago’s rich Chinese culture and community.

The Chinese New Year Lunar Parade is expected to host over 30,000 attendees in Chinatown on February 22. Chicago’s Chinatown, which ranks as one of the best in the country, will showcase marching bands, colorful floats, traditional dance performances, and a 100-ft paper dragon during the event.

The Loop is also loaded with tons of free activities. Watch as lion dancers beat their drums to scare away evil spirits at the Chicago Cultural Center on February 19 from 12:00-1:00pm, or be mesmerized by a Chinese New Year shadow puppet show at the Thorne Miniature Rooms in The Art Institute of Chicago from February 14 - March 5.

Just walking down State Street you will be immersed into the unique light and sound display of Lightscape, located in eighteen planters—each comprised of dozens of LED lights. The unique instillation will feature traditional Chinese music and dancing lights from February 16 - March 5.

If you want to ring in the New Year with a spectacular view of the city, celebrations at ROOF at theWit Hotel on February 19 and 360 Chicago atop of the John Hancock Building may be just what you’re looking for to bring excitement to your new year.  Both spectacular views will have special programs dedicated to the Chinese New Year. 360 Chicago will offer $5 off general admission for the Chinese New Year from February 13 - March 5.

No matter how you celebrate, we wish you a happy and safe Chinese New Year!
